A chest of drawers is also known as a bureau or a dresser. It is a furniture piece/item that has more than one or two drawers which can be stacked vertically or horizontally with each other. The main purpose chest of drawers is to store small clothing items like socks, lingerie, and other such items that cannot be hung in a regular sized closed due to their small size and limited number of drawers in the closet.
Not only this, a chest of drawers is also used to keep other small items like tools, cutlery, and other things which are not required on a daily basis but somewhere or the other the need arises. These drawers are generally placed in the bedrooms and sometimes near the lobby area.
A typical, traditional chest of drawers looks like a long, rectangular structure, having 6-8 drawers in it with two each in every row, having short legs and a simple looks. It is the most basic style of chest and with time, the modifications are done on the same style by giving it different shapes, sizes and of course, colours. It is most commonly carved out of wood.
The top most area of the chest is also very useful. One can place decorative items, showpieces on the same to make it look attractive. Many households even put their televisions on the top of the chest so that it serves the purpose of a TV table, chest and ultimately helping one in fully utilizing the area and space.
Mostly, all the chest of drwarers is within one of the two categories: firstly the ones those are up to the height of a waist or bench and those which are up to the height of shoulder. The surface of both the categories is mostly plane and flat.
The chests that are waist high, are many times used as a dressing table where a mirror is placed on the top of the chest in a vertical position. The dressing items like combs, lipsticks, powder, etc are generally placed in the top most drawers. A small sofa or a stool is placed in front of the chest so that the overall look of a dressing table is complete.
The other style that is shoulder high, the top is used to place decorative show pieces so that the area where it is placed, looks attractive.
